Talking from the heart and a life of experience, this is a book that quite simply, makes you stop and think. Mental Fitness by Ant Middleton is an thought provoking and motivating book. In it, Middleton explains the 15 principles that he lives by to keep his mind and body strong. In this honest book, he outlines his own issues regarding body confidence, how he’s embraced and dealt with failure and how he’s created an unshakeable inner confidence and strength. Using stories from his time in the Forces, his home life and media career, he shares a lifetime of hard-won wisdom. The book outlines what it takes to live with and achieve optimum mental fitness. He also seems to be a bit of a hypocrite - there is one chapter where he says that he wasn't around for his kids and then starts to lecture the reader on how to be a good parent - and as I was listening to the audiobook, it really did sound like a lecture. Learning from other people's mistakes is one thing, but trying to make something sound easy when you've failed to do it yourself is completely different. Some interesting stories - clearly he has led a colourful life so enjoyed that autobiographical aspect of the book. However I found that the lessons /tips that flow from those stories are told in a rather disjointed and random way and are sometimes contradictory. I found this frustrating - perhaps greater edit would have helped. Among his crew were a chef, a banker and a carpenter. Only one, Conrad Humphreys, had the navigational and sailing experience to complement Middleton’s skills of leadership and survival. It was a test of the captain’s resolve, not to mention the physical reality of 60 days at sea, during which he lost more than 10kg. Middleton describes it as one of the hardest things he’s done.
