About this deal

The Fujifilm FinePix S5600 is a photo camera with a resolution of approximately 5.1 megapixels and a maximum image resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. It has a digital zoom of 5.7x and an optical zoom of 10x, as well as a combined zoom of 10x. The lens system is optical, and the data compression utilized is in JPEG format. The camera has a light exposure control of Program AE and a built-in flash. Its sensor type is CCD and the image sensor size is 1/2.5 inches. The compatible memory cards for this camera are XD. The S5600’s newly designed lens produces excellent results at all focal lengths, with good corner sharpness and minimal distortion. Fortunately the main mode dial offers a little more versatility, with the usual auto and program modes joined by aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual exposure. The range of control is better than average for a manual compact, with a maximum aperture of f/3.5 and a minimum of f/13.6, and shutter speeds of four seconds to 1/1000th. Also available on the mode dial are two natural light modes, one with automatic slow-sync flash, two user program modes, the anti shake mode (which as we’ll see is best avoided) and the video mode. The S5700 can shoot at VGA resolution and 30fps with mono sound and electronic image stabilisation, and the zoom lens can be used while filming. Fujifilm has today announced the third incarnation of its S series, the FinePix S5200 Zoom (US) S5600 Zoom (Europe). The 5.1 megapixel mini SLR-style camera boasts a 10x optical zoom and Anti Blur mode which is, Fujifilm says, more effective than image stabilization, ISO up to 1600 and a 5th generation of Super CCD HR sensor. It also offers full manual control, VGA movie mode and RAW image capture. The FinePix S5200 will be available in September. Complete with an unrivalled sensitivity range from ISO 64 to ISO 1600, the camera makes it possible to achieve crisp photographs with minimal noise, even in very low light conditions. The Anti-Blur Mode, which exploits the camera’s exceptional ISO capabilities, reduces blurring caused by movement of the user, as well as movement blur caused by the subject, making it much more effective than image stabilisation technology alone.

Fujifilm FinePix S5200 / S5600 Zoom - Digital Photography Review

An intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) system, which guides the user through the menu via a series of pop-up prompts, and an improved button layout, which mean the camera is easier than ever to navigate. The manual is reasonably straightforward to follow though the camera itself is easy enough to use straight from the box. The more specialised features will be absorbed as you go on. Overall, our time with the FinePix S5600 was very pleasurable, and it performed well in terms of both handling and photographic results. Many of our test outings were in icy sub-zero conditions and we were impressed with the battery life, which had to battle with both the demands of the zoom lens and inclement weather. The FinePix S5200 Zoom features a high-speed start up time of just 1.1 seconds and shutter lag has been minimised to 0.01 seconds. This, combined with a new automatic pop-up flash, means that you’ll never miss out on the action.

The Fujifilm S5200 was primarily targeted at the power-user photographers in Australia, Europe and the United States. It was superseded by the S5700. The S5600 has both an LCD monitor and an LCD viewfinder. Due to the restricted space the monitor is only 1.8in with 115k pixels, which is slightly larger than the screen on the S5500, but with the same fairly low resolution. Its surface is quite reflective, and despite the one-touch monitor brightness control it is very difficult to see in bright daylight. Unfortunately the electronic viewfinder is also 115k pixels, which isn’t really high enough resolution in my opinion. It appears to be the same viewfinder used on the S5500. It would have been nice if it could have been fitted with something similar to the larger and much sharper 235kp LCD viewfinder found on the S9500.

Beneath its robust body lie the sensor enhancements that make the FinePix S5200 Zoom punch above its weight. Boasting a new 5th Generation five megapixel Super CCD HR sensor and Fujifilm’s new Real Photo Technology, the FinePix S5200 Zoom has the power to capture large images with incredible clarity and detail in a range of lighting conditions. The camera’s impressive 10x optical zoom has a fixed lens housing and covers all settings from wide to telephoto. It’s ideal for amateurs and photography enthusiasts alike who want optical power but don’t want to compromise with a heavyweight or bulky camera body. The fixed lens housing also ensures a lightning-fast start-up time and removes the risk of getting dust particles inside the lens or camera body. Features new to the S5600 include an automatic pop-up flash, a Highlight warning that indicates if an area is overexposed, and VGA movie recording at a rate of 30fps. As well as Manual Exposure, users also have the option to shoot in RAW and JPEG. The introduction of Fujifilm’s Intelligent Flash and Natural light plus Flash modes for images that are faithful to the original scene, even when flash is required. One of the primary objectives FujiFilm set out to achieve in this series was to make the camera appealing to SLR users looking for an affordable and versatile digital alternative. They've achieved this, not just in the shape and build of the camera housing, but also in the layout of the controls. FujiFilm has always scored highly when it comes to intuitive design and the S5600 is no exception.
