The FiiO Q5S is the brand’s portable DAC/AMP flagship. It enjoys a dual AKM DAC, a full balanced circuit, the same swappable amp system, and a better Bluetooth connection. Like Apple, the S at the end of the name suggests that FiiO only added a few upgrades, instead of making a completely new device. Headphones – Philips Fidelio X2HR, Audeze LCD-3, Bqeyz Spring 2, Craft Ears Four, Hifiman HE400i 2020, AKG K702, Campfire Audio Vega, Audeze LCD-3 Battery life is insane, with me getting as much as 18 hours on a single charge of mixed usage. There’s also a module available from XTENIK that allows you to add Bluetooth to XD-05 Plus, if you want to keep it perfect, but as a single piece. The treble, as mentioned before, is the most delicate part. It’s very soft, but detail reproduction is outstanding, even if the highs are not set in the first place. There’s no chance of any sibilances, harshness, or slicing your ears — just a pleasant and calm presentation, similar to most of the tube amps. If you do know DACAMP L1, try to remind that with the treble set at -1, that sounds very similar to XD-05, which is more classy and has better details and texture. If the FiiO E10K was a massive success, the FiiO K3 seems to be more discreet. This is a shame as I really think this is one of the simplest solutions to get a good sound out of your computer. It got an AKM AK4452, a Coax/Optical output, an unbalanced/balanced output and most of all, its footprint is even smaller than the FiiO M6.

If you want to send an unaltered Bluetooth signal to it, the best Bluetooth codecs will come to the rescue, as at this moment Q5S is supporting all the best BT codecs including the widest range from the BT version 5.0. Well it seems that the answer is yes at least in the case of the Q5s TC as it takes from the already magnificent Q5s and manages to squeeze even more reaching out for perfection. Plug in the USB C to C cable and you are good to go or press the bluetooth button to enable it and get into pairing mode.The analog potentiometer volume knob aided by ADC curve reconstruction technology eliminates low volume channel imbalance thus allowing for greater precision in adjusting the volume in tiny steps. The overall sound signature of the Q5s TC is of absolute reference quality with a perfectly flat and neutral response. Driving ability from the balanced output is very good and the FiiO Q5s TC can drive all the above mentioned headphones with ease and headroom so it can be sufficient for most use cases.

The Q5s Type C is compatible with the FiiO Control app which allows for greater flexibility and customisation. Midrange is of course where XD-05 Plus shines the most, from female voices to string instruments, flutes and saxophones, all those sounded more present, more alive, more upfront and more outlined. It carries more weight and puts a small emphasis in this area, this is my favorite frequency area and I cannot complain, it grabs my soul as it adds a bit of musicality and brings emotions from my favorite tunes While we have tended to prefer the company’s more budget-orientated products, it’s not at all shy of putting its head above the parapet and slapping a premium price on some of its equipment.

Could someone explain the expected differences between the FiiO ak4493eq (x2) and this month upcoming xDuuo BAL Amp/DAC featuring Es9038Q2m (x2) ? Can't say anything for the Topping. What i would advice is look for a amplifier that by specs says 700-800mW + at 32 ohms. That will be good for a 250ohms. You can get loud volume at lower power specs, but the headphones will not rumble on your head. Meybe try using the Fiio Q5 as DAC with Marantz as amplifier, this will be good. As for portable amps.....there are not many powerful nowadays, as most companies make dac+amp in one and it is often with low output power. The xDuoo XD-05 Plus is an excellent portable DAC/Amp with a warm sound signature, outstanding detail reproduction, build quality and battery. The build quality, design, and a lot of driving power make it a fantastic choice for everyone looking for a portable DAC/AMP. It’s a well-thought device from top to bottom, and it surely deserves all the attention it has gotten in the past few months. Describing sounds has never been an easy task and when the bar rises describing what is better and why becomes elusive or complicated at times and more of a side search or a personal quest for what is more fitting a personal appeal ; in this regard I will write also a brief comparison with the Chord Mojo which I have used quite regularly last months along with other dongles , the comparison will likely provide some hints. and the only reason I am willing to spend that much is AKM. there are two other products I am waiting to buy are ESS and I could buy both and still have enough leftover to buy more. I plan on buying something balanced ~250 ohms. Glad I'm not an audiophile.
FiiO Q5s Type-C Specifications
The main comparisons for the XD-05 Plus are with iFi xDSD, FiiO Q5s and Earmen TR-AMp. There are a few others, but those are the biggest players in the DAC/AMP range for under 500 USD. There are separate USB Type-C ports for charging and data on the XD-05 Plus, just like on Earmen TR-AMP. There’s an Aux In / Out, which means a Line Out, and a Line In, so XD-05 Plus can act as a standalone AMP too. Digital input, in the shape of Optical is also there. Board is accurately populated with high-quality elements, all are well-aligned, soldering is neat, no signs of flux spills. Here you would find all declared chips of dac, amps, and processors. Single OPA1612 op-amp uses 2 slots with the adapter and can easy be swapped to other model, either single or paired. Great that the battery is not soldered to board and uses 4-pin connector instead. This is a peculiar thing: it is labeled as 3.8V (seems to be LiHV type of cells) 5000mAh but consists of 2 cells (in parallel, 4 wires connection). Usually, each cell have similar label or a set of cells has the summarizing label. In first case we would get 3.8V, 5000mAh X 2 (since in parallel) = 3.8V, 10000mAh. Or, if it means the set, we should have 3.8V, 2500mAh/cell but the label should state “2P”. Since xDuoo declares that XD05 Plus has 3.8V, 5000mAh battery – than, it is the second case but “2P” was not stated. Using it as external amp for any source with other types of analog line out -> XD05 line in -> headphones out: additional corresponding line out -> 3.5mm cable is needed
