About this deal

Gather ripe plant materials to make natural dyes. To get the best colors, fruit needs to be fully ripe, nuts need to be mature, flowers should be in full bloom and near the end of their life cycle. Seeds, leaves, and stems can be harvested as soon as they grow in. Combine materials to make a stronger color, or a mixed color: [17] X Research source If the garment you are planning to dye has a light color and you are looking to dye it a darker color: Then all we recommend doing is following the standard instructions for how to use Rit All-Purpose Dye. If you are trying to get as dark of a color as possible, please also read our tips on how to get the darkest color possible.

Now you have some easy-to-follow tips for how to get colour run out of clothes (and how to stop the colour bleeding from clothes in the first place), you won't have to spend the next month in baby-pink shirts. Read other articles from the Clothing Care categoryIf the dye stain was caused by a non-colourfast item in the load, make sure to remove that item and hang it to dry. Keep it separate from other clothing so it won’t stain again. Always act as soon as you notice a dye stain. The longer a stain has to set, the more difficult it is to remove. Since I love beets and we’ve been successful at growing beets in our garden for many years now, I started my experiments with natural clothing dye by using the abundant beets we get every summer from our home gardens and from the local CSA. Using beets as natural clothing dye is probably the easiest way to get started, and you’ll love the results – a romantic, dusty pink! Boil the beets. Cover the beets in your large pot (large enough to accommodate whatever item of clothing you want to dye) with water so that the water level is about 1” above the beets. Bring to a boil and simmer at a low boil for about an hour. Strain the beets and save them for another use, like the boiled beet brownie recipe at the end of this blog. If you’d like, you can add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and/or one tablespoon of salt to your beets while you boil them to help retain the dye.

When using beets and other vegetables for natural clothing dye, it’s always best to begin with a natural fiber item of clothing. Look for T-shirts, tank tops, or other clothing made with 100% cotton. These natural cotton clothes will take up more dye and will hold on to the color longer with normal wear and washing. Adding a little bit of salt and/or vinegar will also help the cotton clothes to retain the color longer.
