About this deal

The epic sold-out gigs, which saw 170,000 fans descend on Stevanage across the Jubilee weekend, mirroring the Manchester band's historic duo of gigs in August 1996, cemented Liam Gallagher's status as a stadium-filling solo act. There is always the danger with a Liam Gallagher gig that it will be viewed as a substitute for the real thing, with his old band being the elephant in the room. Are his renditions of Oasis numbers as good as the originals, are the solo songs penned with his writing team as catchy, clever and inventive as those created by his older brother, and does it really matter? As a solo artist, Liam Gallagher has led the national tally with As You Were (2017), Why Me? Why Not (2019), MTV Unplugged (2020) and C’mon You Know (2022). Twenty-six years later, in June 2022, following the release of his third solo album, C'mon You Know, Liam performed to 170,000 fans at the Hertfordshire stately home, across two nights - which were again, completely sold-out. He explains: "I was struggling to find a way, while we were building such personal stories around Liam, how we were going to put the Oasis music in, in a way that felt contextually sound and also in the context of the fact that there was another Oasis Knebworth documentary only a year ago [Oasis: Knebworth 1996, directed by Jake Scott in 2021]…While not repeating the themes explored in the earlier film, Liam Gallagher: As It Was, Toby says his documentary goes on to "highlight again in a new up to date way that transition point between what do you do after peaking in the biggest band of the time and then try to find your own solo voice and growing up in public". And superfan Simon Heptinstall, 42, from Halifax, who has a garden shed bar called Champagne Supernobar and owns every Oasis CD and vinyl record, as well as every album, Liam has released as a solo artist. He's of the opinion that: "It's a way of life really, Oasis and Liam. It's an attitude, it's who you are as a person". Griffiths, George. "Liam Gallagher's Knebworth 22 becomes his fifth UK Number 1 solo album". Official Charts Company . Retrieved 19 August 2023. Completing an all-new top three on the latest chart blast is Volcano (Caiola), from electronic act Jungle. Volcano should blast to the duo’s fourth top 10 appearance. Mensah, Jenny (9 June 2023). It’s clear that this is going to be a juggernaut of a set both in terms of music and energy – and it’s full steam ahead as Liam segues into a sonic sojourn from material from 2017’s ‘As You Were’ and ‘Why Me? Why Not’ from 2019. They include seven-year-old Audrina from Derby - now in remission from neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer that mostly affects babies and young children - who says of her hero: "I think he's cool, he's always stayed true to himself, he's never been bothered what the other people think about him". As for the style of the time, Liam says: "The fashion I don't think was amazing, but it was decent, I think it went with the music." John Major was prime minister, Spice Girls had spent most of the summer at number one with their debut single Wannabe and Germany had beaten England on penalties, going on to win Euro 1996. Image: Oasis members (L-R) Alan White, Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher and Paul Guigsy McGuigan in 1996 As well as his storming solo material, fans are also treated to a raucous rendition of ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’ where Liam sings as if his life depends on it, an emotionally-charged ‘Wonderwall’ where Liam engages with the crowd with some classic LG banter asking if they are sure they want to hear it. It transpires that they really do and sing along with Liam showing his appreciation by responding with “Biblical, biblical, biblical!” And his fans were up for it, as one says in the film: "It's like destiny, it's like travelling to Mecca. It's a pilgrimage, we don't have a choice, it's something we have to do. We'll be there with our parkas on and the stupid haircuts. We'll be going for it, we'll be ready." As Liam himself says: “So we recorded the Knebworth gigs we did last year. We all sound Biblical, turn it up ENJOY, LGx.” Who could argue with that?! ‘Knebworth 22’ is a gargantuan celebration of a tour de force performance from the one and only Liam Gallagher. As you were!

Key, Iain (9 June 2023). "Liam Gallagher announces Knebworth 22 Live Album". Louder Than War . Retrieved 2 August 2023. National treasure, Manchester music legend, gobby egotist, self-styled godfather of northern cool Liam Gallagher has been called them all – and much more besides. He said "We wanted to add another layer to Liam Gallagher's life and story by not just commemorating his return to such hallowed grounds as a solo artist, but also sharing the light with those that make Knebworth such a landmark location - the people.

More from this Artist

The live renditions in fact add a welcome edge compared to the more sterile studio versions, providing further justification for this release with the band sounding, as Gallagher modestly puts it; ‘Biblical’. The River ends with Liam declaring; ‘This one’s gonna be the last one – sorry’, but he was never going to finish off with the sugary-sweet sentimentality of Once and the inevitable encores follow.

Liam Gallagher: Knebworth 22 is directed by Toby L. and produced by Josh Connolly. Debbie Gwyther, Sam Eldridge, Kate Shepherd, Laura Collins, Jeremy Davies and Bruce Gilmer serve as executive producers. He describes the band as "the underdogs," going on, "they didn't come from privilege. They didn't come with industry connections. They just had some phenomenal songs and an amazing stage presence. Roll It Over’ originally featured on the Oasis album ‘Standing On The Shoulder of Giants’ and, while the band never played it live, it nonetheless turned out to be a lesser-known fan favourite.

You know, the last few years have been so tough in the world and the idea of a big single is concert where we all come together and celebrate as one being, that's what the film explores, the power of live music against adversity."
