Modak is a sweet made during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi as an offering to Lord Ganesha. There are two types of modak – steamed (ukadiche modak) and fried (talniche modak). You can also make sweet modak with dry fruits or mawa. What is Ukadiche Modak? Remove this to a large bowl and let it cool a bit. You want this mixture to remain warm while making dough from it. Using your hand, flatten the lemon-sized dough ball by applying pressure at the center but keeping one finger at the edges to seal any broken sides. Keep applying warm water to your fingers as needed to seal the edges. Today I am sharing my Maharashtrian friend Shweta Pimparkar’s authentic family recipe and tips to make Modak. I was quite afraid to try making Ukadiche Modak as I had heard it is hard to shape them, and they can break when steaming. Idiyappam flour - Use homemade rice flour (slightly roast without changing color) or any good quality fine processed flour. Puttu flour or Thai rice flours (not glutinous ones, regular rice flours) works too if you can reach.Chocolate Coffee Modak – Do you love coffee flavor in chocolate desserts? Then add 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee powder with cocoa powder. The coffee will shine chocolate flavor in modaks. Steamed :a healthy version of modak which tastes delicious with different sweet fillings inside. The steamed version popularly called as ukadiche modak. You can steam it in Instant pot also.

Knead the rice dough using 1 teaspoon of ghee and 2 to 4 tablespoons of warm water for 5 minutes or until the dough is soft and moist. Make 13 lemon-sized balls with the dough and keep them aside. Take a portion of the dough, press it into the cavity of the modak mould till it is evenly lined on all the sides.

Step 3: Sieve the rice flour. Add water to a wide pan and bring it to a boil. Once it comes to a rolling boil, add salt and ghee (images 6 and 7). Do not have the mold? Traditionally Modak was made by hand and it simply takes some practice and patience to shape them uniformly. Here is how to make Modak by hand: Keep covered and set aside for 5 minutes.
After that, once warm enough to handle, knead to a smooth dough. Stuffed Chocolate Modak – Fill modaks with any chopped nuts, dried fruits, chocolate, strawberry jam, or even gulkand. Step 3 – Once the mixture is ready, remove it from heat. Transfer the chocolate modak mixture to a greased plate and let it cool at room temperature. After that, freeze it for 10-15 minutes or refrigerate it until chilled.
