About this deal

With Nurgle abilities now on unmodified 6’s this box is an excellent choice for all the puss fans out there. With the new Khorne book around the corner and the new release of the Stormcast Eternals book, it seems GW is revisiting its Battletomes for Age of Sigmar.

Rustcursed Armour – Alternatively there is this, which hands out a very nice flat +1 save that’s always ‘on’. On top of this, you can target an enemy hero holding an artefact at the start of the combat phase and if you beat their bravery, they lose it. Heroes with artefacts that end up in combat tend to have quite high bravery so this ability is more nice to have for when you roll boxcars, but your basic effect is nice enough that this hardly matters. Chain Warp Lightning – CV7, each enemy unit within 13” takes one mortal wound. Your Engineer’s warscroll spell is better than this. Based on each of the values and pricing, what is your favorite of the Age of Sigmar Vanguard box set breakdowns? Blistrevous, the Living Cyst– what a wonderful name. The bearer adds 2” onto its move characteristic as well as re-rolling all hit rolls with all weapons that this character is armed with. Could be useful on a Verminlord Corruptor or Plague Furnace, maybe. However if there are any other Pestilens Heroes within 13” at the beginning of the Hero phase then this artefact is transferred to them instead, even ones that already have a relic so you’ll need to be more careful with placement so this doesn’t ping over to a Plague Priest who doesn’t really want or need it. C+ What was once one of the worst Start Collecting boxes has transformed into one of the best with the release of the AoS 2.0 Overlords battletome.Diseased– At the beginning of each of your own hero phases roll a dice if the general is within 3” of any enemy units, on a 4+ then one enemy unit within 3” suffers D3 mortal wounds. Most Pestilens characters don’t want to be in melee range that long and with Scurry Away you’re likely not going to be within 3” of enemies during the hero phase. Take something else. C

The naked dwarves are excellent value for money with a massive saving on the RRP for the units at almost 50%. The Hero can be built in 3 different configurations but the rest of the units are single build options. Notably, their is a set of legs to build one of the Runefather/Runemaster/Runeson on foot in addition to the rider, which makes this rather a fantastic box.If you’ve played with or against a Skaven army any time in the history of Age of Sigmar, there’s a good chance these were involved. Infamously one of the most points expensive non-hero units in the whole game, due to costing 320 points and wanting to be reinforced. The second of the 2 Cities of Sigmar boxes that came out with the Battletome, this time its the chance of the old plastic Dwarves to take the turn in the spotlight.

Contents: 1 Terrorgheist (Behemoth, Batteline in Gristlegore) / Ghoul King on Terrorgheist (Leader, Behemoth) / Zombie Dragon (Behemoth, Battleline in Gristlegore) / Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon (Leader, Behemoth), 3 x Crypt Horrors (Battleline in Blisterskin)/ Crypt Flayers (Battleline in Hollowmourne) / Vargheists (Battleline in Soulblight) and 10 x Crypt Ghouls. Vial of the Fulminator– In any hero phase choose a Skryre War Machine within 3” and double that unit’s move characteristic for the turn, at the end of the phase on a 4+ it suffers D3 mortal wounds. Useful to make a Doom Wheel really cross the field averaging then a 28” move at the expense of maybe losing some wounds. C Contents: 1 Warden King (Hero), 1 Cogsmith (Hero), 10 x Ironbreakers (Batteline) and 1 x Gyrobomber Contents: 1 Herald on Blood Throne (Hero), 10 x Bloodletters (Battleline) and 3 x Bloodcrushers (Battleline if General is Skullmaster) Warp Lightning Shield – CV6, until your next hero phase the caster ignores the first 3 wounds caused in each phase. If they take a fourth wound in a phase then they suffer 3 mortal wounds and the spell is unbound. The 1%. If you’ve got an Engineer babysitting Warp Lightning Cannons and no other Skryre units then this is their spell.

Playing Skaven in Warhammer Age of Sigmar

Now that GW has finally switched over from the Start Collecting boxes to the Vanguard box sets for Age of Sigmar, we know the pricing, value, and what to expect in future offerings. Their Warp Lightning Cannon artillery unit can be one of the most powerful ranged weapons in the entire game. Be warned, though: when playing Skaven, you should always bear in mind that everything comes with a risk. Overcharge this cannon before firing, and you’ll get 12 chances to inflict mortal wounds on your target, however, each ‘1’ you roll will see the cannon receive D3 mortal wounds. Half the time you’ll see your opponent become a smoking crater, the other half of the time you’ll curse the dice gods as your Warp Lightning Cannon blinks out of existence; that’s simply the way with Skaven. They also have a bodyguard rule, so you can transfer wounds allocated to Skaven heroes within 3” to the Stormvermin instead on a 4+, or 2+ if they’re Verminus. Now, Skaven do have a few ways to gain access to bodyguards so how important this is will depend on what you’re wanting to bodyguard and why, you’re still paying for that offensive profile so they’re quite expensive in this role. That being said, if you want to walk a Verminlord Warbringer up the board then these will bodyguard it exceptionally well and be one of the units the Warbringer wants around itself anyway. Skaven have been blessed with a bit of a grab bag here, no absolutely safe gimmes but it’s all just about doable if you build for it specifically. After you make your first run roll in a phase, you can choose to use the result of that run roll for any other run rolls you make until the end of that phase.

In truth unless you have one of these two specific plans in mind for them, this is probably one to leave on the shelf. Clans Moulder Giant Rats This is by far the longest one, but very thematic, very cool, and potentially very good if they go off. When you’re chanting a prayer with a Clans Pestilens Priest and happen to roll and unmodified result of 6 then you get to choose on the Great Plagues to also go off, as well as the prayer you were originally attempting, it’s just a nice little bonus. Each of the Great Plagues can only be chosen once per game, and you can only have one Great Plague manifest in each hero phase, so don’t roll too many 6’s. The Great Plagues are as follows:Here are the named Skaven characters with models you can get your hands on when building your own fledgling ratling empire: TAKE ALL OF THE CLAWLORDS. Seriously just take a bunch. Up to 6 Clawlords that are not your General get to take a command trait, for free, they just get one. Can’t take the same one twice and can’t have a model with more than 1 command trait, but this does mean those Clawlords you are taking will always have a trait, and means you get to take something else as your General and still give them a command trait too. Skryre – Warpstone Sparks This, like Start Collecting Anvilgard before it can be used in any Cities of Sigmar army. Don’t let the name fool you! Shadowmaster – Stops your general from being targeted by missile weapons if they’re more than 9” from the enemy. The Deceiver has this on their warscroll and Deathmasters can deploy inside your units, so the very specific niche for this ability is if you want to deploy your Deathmaster on the board (and then presumably teleport them via gnawhole or Skitterleap) and you are too high drop to be able to protect them from ranged alpha strikes. It’s very niche, but it’s there if that’s what you want to do.
