About this deal

His relationship with Guilliman and Sanguinius is fascinating, and those three together form a large, interesting part of the book as his obsession with Curze begins to damage what they’ve built. The similarities aren’t 100% though, and I definitely sympathize with Luther and his cabal at times. His familiarity with the Legion is a considerable asset for this endeavour, and he manages to make them interesting and nuanced again. Angels of Caliban continues the story of the Dark Angels and The Lion during the tumultuous events of the Horus Heresy. It’s good to spend time with these characters again, though, alongside newer names like voted lieutenants Holguin and Farith Redloss.

I enjoyed this quite a bit, although I think I definitely prefer Thorpe’s Raven Guard Heresy fiction — especially Deliverance Lost. We saw him through the eyes of Zahariel and Nemiel, for example, but this time he has scenes of his own, contemplating and weighing options. How this meshes with Luther’s decision to secede Caliban away from the Dark Angels Legion and the Imperium is what most of Zahariel’s arc is about and there are some very juicy tidbits of lore dropped regarding this, and I loved every moment of it. I never would have considered it possible for one of the traitors to mount a feasible defense of their crimes in court but Curze doesn’t do too badly for himself in exposing Lion’s war crimes. They pose a good foil for each other and it’s a shame that their brother Sanguinius has had so little to do in the Imperium Secundus subplot. That novel, in a hundred little ways, was a serious game-changer as the years unfolded, not only because of the groundwork that it and Gav laid for future Dark Angels novels in M41 but also for what would later become the Horus Heresy series and the Dark Angels’ role within. Prior to this the Imperium Secundus arc had focused more on Guilliman and Sanguinius, so it’s good to see the Lion get his turn in the spotlight. The First Legion go to war, and their primarch's brutal actions threaten to tear apart the fragile alliance of Imperium Secundus. By their nature narratives in these stories may overlap, spin-off and move alongside others, so it can get quite complicated navigating the range of books and short fiction.

Here Horus gives credit to all of the units who contributed to the hard fought victory and among those assembled is Luther and a few Dark Angels. This is definitely my favorite Heresy novel/story from Gav Thorpe and probably up there near the top of my favorite Heresy stories all together. In Angels of Caliban, those aspects are picked back up at long last, and there are a lot of additions and expansions to the Dark Angels' background and characterization. A planetoid of roiling Warp madness and infernal Daemonic industry, Wyrmwood was heavily garrisoned by the Cult of the Arkifane and Vashtorr's other allies. He crafts a story that is at once a war story, a revenge tale, a stirring drive towards independence, a political potboiler and a 31st millennium Game of Thrones, at times.
