About this deal

On the back of the sporty Swiss watch – fitted with the Caliber 80 automatic movement , which offers a power reserve of up to 80 hours – MIDO has engraved the time-zone indications. Although the lume is very bright, it doesn't last through the entire night as do some of my other watches. In addition to its screw-down case back, the Ocean Star GMT Black is built with a screw-down signed crown which allows for a water resistance of 200m.

The simple truth is that they are designed with a specification that makes them brothers from different mothers. But doing this hands-on with the new Mido Ocean Star GMT did stir up some carefully hidden feelings. Just as how the Europa Point Lighthouse has unfailingly watched over the Gibraltar Strait since 1841, guiding sailors on the often-rough waters between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the Ocean Star GMT Blue watches over you and is your perfect ally for all kinds of adventures. Office GMT watches, on the other hand, are cheaper, but this Mido does bring the superior GMT function within reach of a large audience. To correct the date of the Mido Ocean Star GMT, you have to move the local time hand forward with the crown in the second position, passing twice over 12.

Well, everyone apart from a few Omegas, and their recent innovation, a non-GMT complication in the calibre 8500 movement family, which offers timezone-setting (1-hr increments) on 3-handed watches.

This remarkable dive watch comes on a stainless steel bracelet that extends from its case to form a single perfect piece that completes its sleek look flawlessly. The dial has applied indexes, there’s a sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective treatment over it, and around it, there’s a unidirectional diving bezel in steel and ceramic. Around the back, the Ocean Star GMT Limited Edition For Hodinkee has a steel caseback with a special engraving showing the specific number of the 999-piece edition. In addition to its screw-down case back, the Ocean Star GMT Blue is built with a screw-down signed crown which allows for a water resistance of 200m. thick, and sports a sapphire crystal, a rotating 24-hour ceramic bezel, and 200 meters of water resistance. The oceanic tones of its dial are further complemented with a blue ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel which enables the tracking of elapsed time. Tucked under that closed caseback, the Ocean Star GMT Limited Edition For Hodinkee employs the ETA Caliber 80 C07. Both the caseback (note the engraving that shows all the time zones in the world, a nice touch) and the crown are screwed down to ensure that it is watertight to 200 metres.
