About this deal

This story drew me in immediately and after I figured out that it was in fact, not a “whodunnit” story, relaxed and enjoyed the ride. The plot is neat and clever, but it is not the stories, the style or the characters alone - though all are good - that set Bauer's work apart. Here we have a 14-year-old boy thrust into a parent role without the necessary resources that an adult has access to. In a sea of novels claiming to provide "a twist so shocking you won't see it coming", she quietly places a superior story that doesn't rely on gimmicks or tag lines in front of us and patiently waits with neatly folded hands until we're through reading.

It starts off a little slow and I had no idea where things were going, but Jack’s character kept me reading. Their accent is extremely thick and there are villages in Macedonia whose dialects are very similar to the languages of the Balkan countries. In the meantime, the quirky police have not been able to solve the hundreds of burglaries in the area: nicknamed *Goldilocks*. And just like so many killers in crime novels, this one uses a murder weapon that is unique and easily traceable – and the case is ultimately solved using information that was available to the police at the time of the murder.

Snap by Belinda Bauer is a captivating, emotional and gripping read about tragic loss, grief, snap decisions and their devastating, longterm impact. I can only implore you not to participate in a drinking game where you take a sip every time you see an exclamation point, because you would be unconscious by page 20. Whilst I guessed some aspects of the story, there were also some surprises that made me exclaim aloud so that Snap is a compelling read. No Winton or Flanagan, no entry from Asia, no entry from Africa and then boasting "hey, we are so edgy, we are now including crime fiction! Note that I only review books/items that I’ve personally used and enjoyed, and all reviews are my own opinion.Oddly enough, I don’t have much difficulty with the various Scottish and Irish dialects but English slang is an absolute mystery to me. I found his sense of honour amongst thieves, alongside Louis, far more acceptable than some of Marvel’s behaviour and tactics. Never has a character study of many working parts felt so much like a thrilling, plot driven experience in all my years of reading. Having also read and enjoyed "The Beautiful Dead" by Belinda Bauer this book "Snap" was always going to be a winner, I wasn't disappointed - I loved every captivating minute. Perhaps this one fell into my lap at just the right time, or maybe it really is that good, but either way I appreciated the complexity of the various threads that, although seem very disjointed and separate at first, slowly gather together to tie in a wicked good ending.
