About this deal

On a positive note the eraser of the Kuru Toga seems to be working really well, and if your writing pressure exceeds the pressure necessary to set the Kuru Toga Engine off this might be the pencil for you. Might be my Kuru Toga, I only have one so cannot compare, the angle or the pressure I use or other factors. When writing much larger, it’s not an issue, but for tiny, complex characters, there’s a bit of a tactile disconnect, which makes the whole thing feel less precise. The rubber grip is comfortable to hold, and the revamped rotation mechanism minimizes movement of the pencil’s lead pipe.

The demand for this pen among my friends has soared, with everyone wanting to experience the smooth and consistent performance of the Sharp ADVANCE Upgrade Model. If you utilize a more classical typical angle of elevation for fountainpen use, like say 45-50 degrees or lower and gliding pressure or give and take some, the mechanism just wont rotate (the angle probably elevates pressure even more), and cursive or any kind of script, like you noted, is out of the question.Litus, sorry to hear about your bad experience, but I’m happy to know that I am not imagining things and that others have experienced the same issues. The metal barrel and clip make for a pencil that should stand up to longer term use (not that we saw many problems with the standard models! I prefer using softer lead and much less pressure, and get pretty inconsistent results most of the time, unless I change my writing style. It sounds as if I was unlucky and got a sub-standard pencil …which would indicate that either the ones produced for the UK are differently to those made for Japan (I assume you imported yours from Japan) or uni / Mitsubishi has a QC problem (or better QC for products sold in Japan).

My original Kuru Toga needs much more force to move the ‘engine’, I think three times as much, but I am not 100% sure about the number. Its double speed core toggling, anti-break mechanism, and reliable rotating core mechanism make it the ultimate companion for those seeking a faster, smoother, and more durable writing experience. Your writing will always remain clean and sharp, and you don’t have to worry as much about lead breakage. It doesn’t work well with very cursive writing where the pencil stays on the page for an entire word and all the letters are joined by loops and curls. This additional metal component gives the pencil more weight while remaining well-balanced in the hand. It’s certainly great that they made this happen, but even they I admire the thoughts that went into it I am slightly disappointed with the reality – but it’s nevertheless a nice mechanical pencil, even more so if it works for you. With the Kuru Toga Advance your letters stay crisp and clear compared to using an ordinary mechanical pencil. Here is a link to a review, but I think the description in the blog post I link to could be more accurate, it makes it sound like a Del-Guard pencil. We've been using early samples from Japan on a daily basis since the end of 2008 and they really do work.
