About this deal

Palate: Viscous and oily on the tongue. Vanilla, Peppers, oak, and some fruits (peaches, apples) with a gingery edge. I'd been helping my wife out at the family business and as we were shopping for supplies for the store we passed one of the largest chain liquor stores in the area, Dan Murphy's, and since it had been months since I'd been into a bottleshop that wasn't mine or my sister stores, I asked her if she minded if we went looking. George Smith's decision would prove to be an unpopular decision; every other distiller was operating illegally at the time and hoping the new Excise Act would be repealed, something which would not happen if some distillers accepted the new law. Threats were made against Smith, so George Gordon provided Smith with two pistols to be used to ensure both his own safety and that of the distillery. [8] In 1824, The Glenlivet distillery was established at Upper Drumin by George and his youngest son John Gordon Smith. [1] [16]

George Smith died in 1871 and his son John Gordon Smith inherited the distillery. The quality of the product from their distillery had resulted in the other distilleries in the area renaming their products to "Glenlivet" and by the time of George's death, several distillers were doing so. J.G. Smith decided to take legal action and tried to claim ownership on The Glenlivet name, this legal action was only partially successful - the verdict forced other distillers in the area to stop calling their whisky Glenlivet and gave J.G. Smith and the blender Andrew Usher sole permission to use the brand, but permitted other distilleries to hyphenate their distillery name with the "Glenlivet" name, which resulted in new distillery names such as The Glen Moray-Glenlivet Distillery, a distillery which is situated nearby. [1] [16] Nose: LOTS of vanilla. Am I allowed to say “Vanilla Bomb”? Perfumey. Some light, but non-cloying touches of butterscotch. White peach and buttered toast. A satisfying, concentrated aroma. Finish: Fairly long, dry, and bittersweet, with orange, lavender, mild spices, licorice, toasted hazelnuts, and lots of oak mingled with some lingering peach and honey.

Palate: Similar to the nose, the palate starts off hot when sipped neat. But once past the unpleasant alcohol burn, there’s an explosion of sherry goodness. It’s a light and bright sherry, rather than a dark and brooding sherry like you find in Glendronach or some Aberlours. If sherry can be zesty, this is an example. It features a medium sweetness, with notes of maple syrup, molasses, fig, walnut and plum. The brightness does make it more savory than a traditional sherry bomb, an interesting twist for a whisky that was aged exclusively in Oloroso casks. The mouthfeel while neat isn’t amazing, with more youth and grains coming through, leading to a thinner mouthfeel than I was expecting.

In the mouth: Like a milky menthol cigarette, a Newport! There is a creamy coating mouthfeel. Old dried honey. Herbaceous; basil, mint. Lemon pepper. It makes me salivate and deserves a little water, then comes the friendlier Bit-O-Honey and lime rind. Conclusions: Finish: The honey, vanilla and cereal dominate, and they linger throughout the medium-long finish. A bit of oak here, too. There is also some nutmeg, ginger, and pepper, but the spices are gently presented and very well integrated. This is undoubtedly the best finish I’ve tasted from a Glenlivet whisky before. All in all, the four of us, my wife, my brother and sister in law and myself all come away more then a little disappointed in this batch. The meaning of the word ‘Nadurra’ means natural in Gaelic , and basically here it means that it’s non chill filtered. There are 3 main expression in the Nadurra line : 16 year old , Triumph (named after a variety of barley that is no longer in use by the Glenlivet) , and Travel Retail (and reduced 48% ABV).
