About this deal

After a little upkeep the first thing that happens is all the golems on the board move. Each player will have a golem movement number which they must use the whole total of, although it can be split between all your golems on the board. Generally building golems makes this number higher and killing them slightly lower. But it is also influenced by the current rounds character card which adds an amount of movement on for all players.

The other consideration is the amount of marbles in the row you take from. The more marbles there are in a row when you choose one the more resources you will get, or the bigger a discount. Three of the five actions work broadly the same. You take resources equal to the strength of the action and then are able to upgrade one part of your player board, and possibly take the relevant action. My Precious (X2) Whatever it is, there is no denying that Plan B Games’ Spice Road has made it’s mark as an accessible Splendor-like game with added depth. Does the Golem Edition change that? Golem Edition Actions are building Golems, writing books and discovering artefacts. Which are all paid for by the matching resource, clay for golems, knowledge for books and gold for artefacts, as well as the action you may perform an upgrade in the matching area of your player board. You will often want to do both but only be able to afford one which creates a nice tension of choices. The number of marbles available in the corresponding action line determines how much the player gets from the action. When you choose an action, you collect one marble of your choice in the corresponding line and depending on the color of the marble you chose, you also move your student forward on one of the districts of Prague. Century Golem Edition an Endless World is the not-so-snappy title of an actually-quite-snappy game by Emerson Matsuuchi from PlanB Games. The sixth in the series of Century games follows the original trilogy of Spice Road, Eastern Wonders and a New World to be the concluding chapter of the reworking of the three in Golem guise. Golem Of The CenturyThe game ends when a player takes their 8th scoring Golem and the rest of the round is played out. You then get the points for Golems, Bonus tiles, non-yellow crystals and possibly exploration tiles when you uncovered new locations. While the bot’s decision tree tends towards taking the best short-term option, it obviously doesn’t have the long-term strategic thinking capabilities that would allow it to fully maximize its score. For instance, the Automa cards will lean towards taking a marble from the row with the most marbles. But the better option might be to draw from a row with one fewer marble (really only marginally inferior), allowing for completion of an artifact that will begin earning extra income this round. Card-based solo AI isn’t sophisticated enough to perceive these minute strategic implications and therefore goes with what appears to be the most beneficial action in the here and now. But one more resource now is strictly worse, of course, than an extra six resources and two points right after this turn. Final Thoughts: Whatever it is, there is no denying that Plan B Games' Spice Road has made it’s mark as an accessible Splendor-like game with added depth. Does the Golem Edition change that? Golem Edition Golem is a brilliant game. There are many elements but they intertwine in a pleasing and thoughtful way. All your actions are important and nothing is wasted, but you are also regularly rewarded. Now remember I mentioned the coloured marbles having another use? Each of the four rounds has a character card assigned to it. This character will offer certain benefits but only if the marbles you used match the marbles on their card. After this you will earn income based on the main board and your player board. Control Freak

Century: Golem Edition – Eastern Mountains combines with its predecessor, Century: Golem Edition. This creates a whole separate game in itself, called The Call for Adventure!

What I Didn’t Like

Knowledge is one of three main resources in the game. It not only pays to control the Golems, but is also used to study adding books to your player board for bonuses and scoring. Clay is used to build your Golems, and upgrade your Golem making facilities, while gold coins are used in the building and upgrading of artefacts. These are small blemishes on an otherwise excellent game that will be a winner for all fans of euro games. It’s not one to whip out for those new to gaming but for those looking to get their teeth into a couple of hours of satisfying and rewarding game play will find a new favourite here. The legend of the Golem is one of the most fascinating stories in the world and has its roots in the Jewish tradition.

One of the hooks of the Century series is that you can combine any two or more together. In Century Golem Edition an Endless World you get the rules and materials for the three possible combinations in the Golem world featuring an Endless World (EW) i.e. Golem Edition (GE) + EW, Eastern Mountains (EM) + EW and GE + EM + EW. Other cards simply produce crystals and finally other cards allow you to upgrade crystals (Yellow-Green-Blue-Pink). The Merchant card on the far left is free, but any kind to the right of that must be paid for by laying one crystal of your choice on each card to the right of it. This is one of my favourite parts of Century - should I cough up my hard earned crystals to get that shiny card that would really help me, or do I use them to fulfil that points card and move closer to the end game. Crystals for my Spice Spells:Obtain Knowledge and perform spells (with a scoring for book collection) and upgrade developments on your personal board. The iconography in Golem is tough. Like Alma Mater, you are going to have to keep the manual handy to explain new round cards or what all of the bonuses are on the completed Golem body parts. By my third or fourth game, no problem, but it isn’t as intuitive as other similar games. Use your knowledge (represented by the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet “Aleph”) to study traditional books, collectA significant portion of a final score in Golem comes from multiplying collected menorahs by the number of completed elements in an area. While the strategy tiles give it an area to focus on, there are times when the Automa fails to ramp up its engine to the point where it has maxed out the potential of one of the three primary scoring areas. This means that it can struggle to compete with a smart solo player. Century: Spice Road started life as Caravan, the game was fundamentally the same but was planned to be released with two themes, the one we have now, and a Crystal Golem version that was sadly ditched. Now Spice Road is the first of the ‘Century’ trilogy. Then the internet spoke and the Golem Edition was reborn! Despite the decisions on display I never felt under or overwhelmed. Whether my plans were in tact or had to be adapted there was nearly always something I wanted to do and more importantly was worth doing. At four players the game positively sprints by as players are a turn-taking blur of card and crystal grabbing before cashing in. Some players slow this down but by in large when your turn comes round you know exactly what you want to do. My Precious
