NUTRITION: Use one powder sachet per hour or combine with Beta Fuel gels or chew bar to hit hourly 80-120g carbohydrate intake The bike discipline is arguably the best opportunity to consume nutrition during a triathlon. Your bike allows you to carry your nutrition easily. It’s important to start fuelling before you start to feel fatigued, it’s common to start fuelling within the first 10 minutes of being on the bike. For training and competition of 2 – 2.5 hours or more, SiS Beta Fuel is the next generation of endurance fuelling. Tsintzas, O. K., Williams, C., Wilson, W. & Burrin, J. (1996). Influence of carbohydrate supplementation early in exercise on endurance running capacity. Medicine and science in sports and exercise, 28(11), 1373-1379. A 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose increases the percentage of ingested carbohydrate that is oxidized (known as efficiency) from 62% to 74% when compared with a ratio of 2:1

Great for endurance athletes that are trying to go the distance. The Beta Fuel 80 delivers an optimised 80g of carbohydrate in a single, convenient isotonic fuelling solution with minimal risk of GI discomfort. If I lose nutrition e.g. dropping a bottle (more so during training than in a race), is there a shop or café on route I can use?Fructose has a different transporter than glucose, a dual source formulation allows for greater carbohydrate delivery to our muscles during exercise, therefore increasing how much carbohydrate we can use. But how is best to take on nutrition during a triathlon? Well, the perk of triathlon is the three disciplines, and you can adapt your nutrition for each discipline. SWIM

Increase the percentage of ingested carbohydrate oxidised from 62% (2:1 ratio) to 74% (1:0.8 ratio) You’ve made it to the run. Fuelling for running is a common challenge and is individual between athletes. Some can continue their nutrition strategies into their run, whilst other athletes (particularly during a standard distance triathlon) will have focused on consuming all their nutrition during the bike segment of the triathlon. The key difference in the new SiS Beta Fuel range is the change in the ratio of maltodextrin to fructose, previously being 2:1 and now moving to 1:0.8. In comparison to the 2:1 ratio, the 1:0.8 ratio has now been proven to: For training and competition of 2 – 2.5 hours or more, the SiS Beta Fuel range is the next generation of endurance fuelling and provides a variety of performance solutions to choose from with powders, gels and chews available to build your ultimate nutrition strategy. Our new formula uses an optimised ratio of maltodextrin to fructose providing a science-based complete fuelling solution for triathletes. Rowlands, D. S., & Houltham, S. D. (2017). Multiple-Transportable Carbohydrate Effect on Long-Distance Triathlon Performance. Medicine and science in sports and exercise, 49(8), 1734-1744.

Examples of a 2 hour and a 4-hour fuelling strategy using Beta Fuel can be seen below. These are just examples and can be adapted depending on your expected duration, but provide a starting point. Even after 3 hours of sustained effort 50% of energy used was from SiS Beta Fuel, rather than the body’s own fuel stores, with no cross-over from carbohydrate to fat usage taking place I also started using the Beta Fuel chews. The chews come in Orange and Lemon flavours and provide 46g of carbohydrate. In my opinion these are a welcome change, providing a jelly-like texture different to any other SIS product, the lemon flavour being my personal preference. They’re not too chewy and are easy to consume on both the bike and the run, personally my favourite product from the new range!

In short, the all-new Beta Fuel range works by providing two different forms of carbohydrate, maltodextrin and fructose, which can be simultaneously absorbed. This is key as the transportation of nutrients across the intestinal wall is a rate limiting factor in carbohydrate oxidation during exercise. The new formula of Beta Fuel uses an optimised ratio of maltodextrin to fructose at 1:08 (previously 2:1) providing a science-based, complete fuelling solution for triathletes. Fair enough, but you will NEVER pay RRP for Bulk Powders products, they swap from one offer to another constantly, usually 40-50% off. Even at full RRP it is still less than half the price of the SIS Beta Fuel, so I can’t imagine there is a huge market for cyclists who need Beta Fuel over a significantly cheaper option with the odd gel (which you can pre cut the sachet to rip open easily with your teeth mid race). With whatever fuel you choose to use, it is important to ask yourself the following questions about the practicalities of that fuel: The new range of Beta Fuel products has an optimised ratio of maltodextrin to fructose. Our previous version used a ratio of 2:1, whilst the new range is 1:0.8. SiS Beta Fuel works by providing these two different forms of carbohydrate which can be simultaneously absorbed. This was successfully tested by world leading associations and teams before becoming the naturally flavoured, informed sport certified product you know today.

The SIS Beta Fuel manages to squeeze 80g of stomach-friendly carbs into a 500ml bottle. The 2:1 ratio maltodextrin:fructose solution allows you to process a bottle per hour, allowing an intake of 240g of carbs within a three-hour race. Quite simply, I find this a lot easier to get on board during high-intensity races. During a standard distance triathlon taking approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with the aim of consuming 80–120 g of carbohydrate per hour (200-300 grams in total), you could use the SiS Beta Fuel range in the following format: DISCIPLINE, SIS BETA FUEL OPTION & AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATE Swim 1500m – 1 x SiS Beta Fuel Gel in Strawberry & Lime before getting in the water – 40 grams
