About this deal

Use a long skirt you have a home, or attach white or blue fabric to the hem of a shorter one – use safety pins if needed. For a lot of primary schools, Christmas means one thing: the Nativity! And while it's lots of fun (and very cute) seeing the kids perform, the preparation that goes into a Nativity play can be stressful: from learning lines, to making that all-important costume! Making your child's Nativity costume at home yourself might feel like a daunting task, but don't worry; we're here to help!

We love this shepherd's stripy tabard – all she needs now is a toy sheep and a crook to complete the look. The most popular addition is the old striped tea towel wrapped around the head. If you don't have a suitable tea towel, you can try using a pashmina which can be wrapped around your child's head, turban-style. I’m not on social media but just wanted to reach out and say I have been recommending you to everyone I know, with kids of course! Mary is often depicted in a lovely blue robe with a white headpiece. She’s one of the three main figures of the Holy Family, along with Joseph and the Holy Babe. These costumes are perfect for your Nativity scene or church play. There’s a Virgin Mary costume for children and for adult women. Decorate their robe by using safety pins to fasten on strands of tinsel of all colours. Tie the robe with gold rope or ribbon. Cut around the semi-circle so that your child has a hole to put their head through. If you like, you could stop here with the tabard, but if you want to make it neater then follow the next steps.

As with Mary, make the pillowcase into a simple tunic top. Make cuts down the sides for the arms to come through, and at the top for the head. Cut both pieces into stars of equal sizes. Do be aware that your child may have to sit down at some point so don’t make the stars so big that this becomes difficult. Cut around the semi-circle so that your child has a hole to put their head through. If you like, you could stop here with the dress, but if you want to make it neater then follow the next steps.

Ok, tea towel and band were easy enough. I just needed to find a non-musty, non-crumpled one that’s not ‘grey’ from overuse, never to see white again. And a band – bit of elastic would do fine, so he could just slip it over his head. It was a shame we’d given away my mum’s old arabic head-dress from her time living in Saudi Arabia as a child. Fold the sheet in half and cut a line in the fold for your child’s head to fit through. Don’t cut too far, or else it will slip over their shoulders. Try it on – you may need to cut along the bottom if it’s too long.

To make a Joseph costume you’ll need: A cream or brown pillowcase (buy cheap or dye one if needed), a long skirt, a stretchy hairband, a length of brown fabric, a leather belt, some sandals and possibly a robe. But a tunic. I didn’t really want to sew, so I debated using a pillowcase and cutting head and arm holes. The only problem was getting that on and off. N’s not as small as he used to be so I didn’t think a pillowcase would fit. Adult Unisex Scarf, Long Cotton Scarf, Veil, Tichel for Fashion, Biblical, Nativity, Saint, Adventurer, Passion Play, Historical Costuming, To portray Mary, you need a special costume, one that will radiate the gentle courage and beauty of the mother of Jesus. However, amongst all the excitement you've probably got the stress of making their Nativity play costume yourself. Great idea because the supermarket costumes aren’t fire safe. I threw out anything that isn’t fire safe and so using ordinary fabric is a much safer alternative. I am layering and cutting off arms and cutting up the front so I have long waist coats to go over the main tshirt. I am also going to add a bit of bling to the front of the kings waistcoats. A great idea thank you.
