There are also collectivites d'outre-mer which have more autonomy and can pass their own laws, although certain areas such as defence are decided by Paris. From this point of view: thanks, Germany! True. Although some of the best tailors in the world are in London.

Right now France is slowly becoming smaller and smaller compared to Germany economically. But compared to Britain, they are more even. French foreign legion is pretty damn cool: Gurkha's not so much.' Considering the French success rate in wars, and the fact that the legion is made up of FOREIGNERS that is not a well sustained comment. Give me any British regiment any day. Do I like the French? I don't really know them that well. They're quite a closed people, but then my French is not particlarly good. English ladies liked him. This tension is evident even in the critically acclaimed comedy Dix pour cent (Call My Agent!). The first episode of the opening season sets the tone: cultural icon Cécile de France is offered a major Hollywood role – on condition that she "update" her aging appearance. The episode hinges on whether the actress will physically morph herself into an American image of beauty, or stay with the supposedly French notion of "natural" beauty. This conundrum is presented in a witty, playful way, and while it is not the primary focus of the show, it is never far from the surface, nor from the national psyche.

France's overseas territories are very scattered, taking in the Caribbean, South America, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific and the Antarctic. What gets me about my own people the French is that the people they criticize the most are the people who helped them the most like Americans, Australians, Canadians, English and New Zealanders. Who can afford to bite the hand that feeds them? When President Françoise Holland signed the bill into law on 18 May 2013, France became the ninth country in Europe and 14th in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Although polls at the time showed that around 50% of French people supported it, not everyone was happy about it. In fact, thousands of people defending the so-called ‘family values’ took to the streets in protest. Crowds at the 2013 Paris Pride Parade, just weeks after France legalized same-sex marriage 13. Norway and Germany have the best insulated homes.

Two sinister underlying obsessions link this contemporary discourse to the earlier reactionary and nationalist French essayists. The first is a belief in an immutable “eternal France”. Maurras, who was a leading figure in Action Française, a political movement that was founded in 1899 to defend “true France”, termed this le pays réel (the real country): a land of church spires, ancestral soil and family tradition. It was to be distinguished, in his view, from le pays légal (the legal country), or the artificial structures of the anticlerical republican administration. Old enemies and new English is full of French words. I once read in a book called "The influence of France in the English Educational System" that English was like a museum of Antiquity for the French language. Netflix's French-language output has improved rapidly, and The Eddy offers a guide in how to blend the best of French and American influences. With bilingual dialogue and jazz as its primary medium, the series offers a counterpoint to the sterile depictions of Paris. Set in Belleville, birthplace of Edith Piaf, this show captures the texture of a lived city, beyond the mere cliché of "grittiness" – its creativity, sensuality, and fragility.

Most brides dream of walking down the aisle in a beautiful white wedding gown. But until the nineteen-hundreds, they rarely bought a special wedding dress and opted for their best outfitinstead. The popular tradition actually originated in France with the marriage of Anne of Brittany and LouisXIIof France in 1499.
