About this deal

With a delivery price well in excess of what most people are prepared to pay for an entire bicycle repair stand, the Hirobel Carbon Frame Clamp is going to remain pretty rare even among diehard home workshop fettlers. But if you have a fleet of bikes, strange carbon aero shapes, or very short exposed lengths of seatpost, this may well be the workstand accessory you've been looking for all these years. A tube-clamping repair stand is the most common style. You simply lift the bike and fit it into the jaws of the clamp by its seatpost. Many offer height and angle adjustment. Unior’s 1693A Bike Gator does a solid job as a workstand – but its fierce clamp doesn’t suit all frames and seatposts. Yes, you can take regular non-folding commuter bikes (which feature among the best hybrid bikes) on many trains but often not during rush hour services and you may have to book a slot. On some services, such as the London Underground and New York City buses, they aren't allowed at all. A folding bike gets around those problems if you are commuting by bike.

There's a 250 watt front hub motor and 375Wh battery. Gocycle claims a range of up to 80km, although we didn't achieve more than 44km on hilly commutes. The 20in wheels and V-brakes may be of no particular brand, but the Mariner D8 gets an eight-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain, a great reliable and durable component, and a great find at this price point. The lightest folding e-bike we’ve seen actually available to buy is the A-bike at 12kg, but most models are over 15kg and over 20kg isn’t an unreasonable mass. Well, yeah, you can just use a hook, and Park Tool — the most well-known bike tool brand — even makes a hook for just that purpose. It's a simple vinyl-coated hook that mounts into wood and holds just about any bike. The 451, listed here, is a 55mm wide hook and if that's not wide enough Park Tool also offers the 471 and 471XX to cover tyres as wide as 5 inches. Clamping a bike by the seatpost can mean having to move the post to secure enough 'real estate' for the clamp – risking misalignment of the saddle, returning it to the wrong height or ultimately stripping the clamp bolts through repeated tightening/loosening. With modern bike-fit principles setting seat height to within fractions of a millimetre, you don't want to be getting this wrong... Because of what they do, folding bikes are popular among commuters who will opt for components that are easy to maintain and reliable.

The Tilt 500 features seven gears, comes with fenders pre-installed and the highly adjustable saddle height allows for sharing across riders of different sizes. If you want a wide spread of gears, a derailleur system is better, but less practical in the folding bike world. There is another way to look at efficiency though. Efficiency of space is one interpretation but efficiency of resources is another. Stated more simply, "what's the most affordable way to store a bike?" If that's your angle on efficiency there's really no better solution than a screw-in hook like the one we featured from Park Tool. It works, it's inexpensive, and it also makes pretty good use of space. How do you store expensive bikes?

Folding neatly in half and at the stem, this B'Twin is a very competitively priced folding bike from sports giant Decathlon's house brand. It's an impressive option that's well priced. Combine this with the difficulty of clamping increasingly thinner-walled and strangely shaped hydroformed alloy tubing or complex 3D carbon layups, and what's an honest fettler to do? Enter the Hirobel Carbon Frame Clamp. It's a brilliantly simple and elegant solution that just works. While earlier models of the Clug could be marred by a flat front tyre, the Clug Pro features a cord that magnetically passes through the wheel and provides another grip point. The basic design has always stayed the same, but at least if your front tyre loses air, the bike will still stay put. The Silca Hirobel represents an alternative mounting option and is especially useful for carbon frames.

The Tacx Spider Team workstand is aimed more at fettling your bike pre- and post-race rather than as a full-on workshop tool, and thanks to its lightweight aluminium alloy/plastic construction it's easy to transport and simple to set up. This time the Vektron has slightly smaller 20-inch wheels, although these are larger than some folding bike models, like the Brompton, which are teamed with Schwalbe Big Apple tyres, and should provide a really stable and comfortable ride feel.
