The amount of revelations grows absolutely ridiculous in the last 30-40 chapters. There are like 10 to 15 plot twists every chapter, and I'm not exaggerating. At a certain point I grew numb to all this and started treating the novel as a comedy. At another point I had to take a piece of paper and try to figure out the family tree. By the end there remained like one character from the cast who wasn't directly involved in some sort of a conspiracy. He quietly followed along, reciting those vows that had once been carved into his mind yet were now unfamiliar: "We share in the robes of war, no victory, no return..." He mounted an ordinary warhorse the color of dates, the plumes on his helmet waving in the wind. The city gates opened, and the army moved north. In that moment, once more, he returned to the side of his old friends, his comrades, and his Northern Frontier Army, as an insignificant footsoldier.

The word-building in Yu Wu doesn't play a big role either. Admittedly, 2ha and Yu Wu are set in the same universe, which was properly explained in 2ha already, so the author dindn't have a need to go into the world's details in Yu Wu. And, considering how much more popular 2ha is, most people who read Yu Wu have previously read 2ha and are acquainted with the world's intricacies. But still, it makes Yu Wu less detailed. We don’t get Gu Mang’s side and we only get glimpses of him as he used to be in Mo Xi’s memories, a lighthearted, volatile person who is desperate to survive. He’s a pitiful creature now, believing he’s a wolf, forced to be a prostitute as a punishment by his owner Murong Lian, and constantly tortured to learn the secrets of Liao. Was this darker than I expected after The Husky and his White Cat Shizun? No. Did it break my heart more? Into freaking pieces. This isn't a story about two humans that can't communicate, this is a story about betrayal of the absolute most heartbreaking kind. The characters and relationships in Remnants of Filth are as complicated as I was hoping for, the world brutal, and of course full of political intrigue and strict social customs. Mo Xi especially is the kind of complicated character that you immediately fall in love with while also realizing as the story unfolds that due to his noble status he was unable to fully understand everything Gu Mang had gone through.The traitor Gu Mang returned to his home kingdom (country? empire) again. Everyone rejoiced in his banishment. It was said the one who hated him most was his closest friend—the cold and stoic Young Master Mo. Mo Xi, you are hopeless. Yes, you have every right to be mad at Gu Mang, but don't think it has made you stop loving him. The way Gu Mang is after being returned, is innocent and honest. He does not reflect the man that aimed to kill. I suspect in the next volume they will aim to return Gu Mang's soul and mindset. Then Mo Xi can face him and finally resolved his lingering questions. The author did a fantastic job of foreshadowing and weaving a very cohesive story that tied up all loose ends. There were a lot of things early on that I didn't think twice about that ended up getting explained in more context near the end. For example, the mysterious owner of Gu Mang's precious brocade bag with the fire character on it, or how Li Qingqian's heart obsession was dissolved with a couple sentences from Jiang Fuli's wife along with a peak at her face. I was curious about these things but forgot about them as the story progressed, so it was such a pleasant surprise to see them incorporated neatly into the overall picture.
